Celebrate St George’s Day at Home in 2024

Celebrate St George’s Day at Home in 2024 - theskinnyfoodco

St George’s Day is fast approaching! This year, it falls on Tuesday 23rd April 2024. Now is the perfect time to start planning how to celebrate the patron saint of England and all of your favourite things about English culture!

St George is the patron saint of England and the British royal family. Legend has it that he slayed a dragon to rescue a princess, and the iconic red and white English flag (the cross of St George) is named after him.

The famous Saint George's Day celebration on Trafalgar Square will take place on Sunday 21st April. But if you’re looking for ways to celebrate at home, here are a few family-friendly ideas.

St George’s Day Ideas - Celebrate at Home

  1. Serve up a traditional full English breakfast with bacon, eggs, tomatoes, sausages and hash browns. Enjoy your breakfast with a glass of Buck’s Fizz.
  1. Invite friends and family for a hearty roast dinner with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and all the trimmings. For dessert, prepare a traditional English dessert like apple crumble, Bakewell tart, spotted dick, or fruit trifle. Remember to dress your dining room with a red and white tablecloth and hang some bunting on the walls.
  2. Set up an afternoon tea party. Invest in a tiered cake stand and display dainty cucumber sandwiches, fruit scones and a selection of miniature cakes. You could make banana bread, double chocolate chip muffins or flapjack using our baking mixes. Remember to serve the scones with clotted cream and a selection of fruit jams.
  3. Challenge friends to an afternoon of traditional English games - think dominoes, skittles, darts or cribbage. After the games, you can make a big pot of tea and serve it in pretty cups and saucers alongside a generous slice of Victoria sandwich cake
  4. Organise your own Great British Bake Off event. Ask friends to bake cakes or biscuits and bring them along to be judged (and tasted!).
  5. Check the local newspaper to find information on events and St George’s Day parades closer to home.
  6. Take a picnic to a local park or visit an English Heritage or National Trust property, such as an ancient castle or historic abbey.
  7. Arrange a street party with your neighbours. Ask everyone to bring some food, set up some party games, and don’t forget to stock up on sweet treats like these chocolate buttons or chocolate malt balls for the kids!
  8. Host a fancy dress party. There are so many costume options, including knights and dragons. For a simpler theme, just ask everyone to wear red and white outfits.
  9. If you want to celebrate with drinks, plenty of tea is a must! Why not try adding one of our delicious tea syrups to your cuppa for a twist on the traditional drink? And if the weather is good, our strawberry, mint & elderflower tea syrup makes a refreshing and healthy iced tea drink.
  10. Want to add a few alcoholic drink options to the menu? You could serve English beers and ciders, gin cocktails made with Bombay Sapphire or Gordon's gin, English sparkling wine, or Buck's fizz. If you're counting the calories, check out our range of luscious zero-calorie and sugar-free cocktail mixers and drops.

With so many ways to mark this special day, don’t let St George’s Day pass you by without planning an epic celebration!
