How To Celebrate St George’s Day In 2025

We think St George’s Day is criminally underrated. Chances are, you might not even have heard of it!
But don’t worry. You can find out everything you need to know about the history and traditions of England’s national day right here.
The history of St George’s Day
Spoiler alert - St George wasn’t actually English!
He was actually born in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey) and served as a Roman soldier. He became a legendary figure after supposedly slaying a dragon and becoming a Christian martyr.
He’s been the patron saint of England since the 14th century, and the cross of St George (a bold red cross on a white background) is basically the OG English flag.
Traditional celebrations
Historically, St George’s Day (celebrated each year on 23rd April) was a massive deal. Think parties, parades, and enough patriotic spirit to make your grandad proud.
If that’s your bag, you can head to Trafalgar Square on Monday, 21st April, for live music, dance, tasty treats, and “to celebrate everything brilliant about England and being English.”
Away from the capital, St George’s Day tends to be a little more low-key (unfortunately there’s no bank holiday in England!) but that doesn’t mean it can’t still be fun!
From food and drinks to outdoor activities, here are a few ideas of things you can do on Saint George Day.
How can I celebrate St George’s Day?
If you want to celebrate, start with some delicious British fare. We’re thinking full English breakfasts, toad in the hole, roast dinners with all the trimmings, hearty meat pies, classic beer-battered fish and chips, and plenty of ale or local beer.
And for dessert, how about a traditional steamed pudding or rhubarb crumble?
Of course, if you’re tracking macros or committed to your exercise regime, you might need a few smart food swaps up your sleeve.
If that’s you, try swapping traditional meat pies for lean, protein-packed alternatives. You could also opt for grilled fish rather than battered, or cook a roast with lean, high-protein meats such as turkey or chicken.
Whatever you go for, load up on veggie sides, and choose low-calorie craft beers or mocktails.
If you’re hosting, decorate the room with red and white decorations, a St George’s cross tablecloth, and maybe even a few dragons!

You could also come up with some active ways to celebrate, such as a HIIT themed workout in red and white clothes, a local historic walking tour, or a community charity run.
Remember, patriotic celebrations don’t have to be stuffy. Whether you’re a fitness fanatic, a history buff, or just someone who loves a good knees-up, St George’s Day is the perfect time to get active, eat well, and celebrate the patron saint of England!
