The summer is the perfect time to get outside and soak up some vitamin D. Gym memberships can be expensive, and if you’re looking for alternative low-cost training options, then we’ve got loads of suggestions. 

You can train outside, anywhere, for free and get the physical and mental benefits of being outdoors. It’s a win-win. And the best time to make the most of outdoor training is during the summer months when it’s easier to motivate yourself to get outdoors.

There are lots of outdoor exercise spots around the UK. The key is finding options that are local to you. From outdoor gyms in parks to obstacle courses and climbing frames, you truly can enjoy keeping fit without having to pay a penny. You just have to get a little creative and be willing to use local facilities. 

So, what are the options? Let’s explore how to exercise outdoors for free.

Free outdoor exercise ideas for the summer

  1. Outdoor gyms

A lot of local councils have installed outdoor gym equipment for the general public. Whilst some of the equipment isn’t the best, you can still get a decent workout in. Use the equipment provided to get moving and stay active, and you can always throw in a few bodyweight exercises too. You can use this tool to find your local outdoor gym.

  1. Woodland workouts

Have you ever gone out in nature and created a unique workout? If not, you should try it. Head out to your local woods and get creative. Lift logs and do jumps over them (safely). Run through woodland paths and look for opportunities to use what’s around you. 

  1. Hill sprints

Find a steep hill near you and try to fit in some tough hill sprints once a week. You’ll always get a hard workout done, and all you need is a pair of trainers and a challenging climb. Set yourself a little session to complete, for example 5-10 hill sprints with recovery in between. 

  1. Running

Simple yet effective. Running is an excellent way to stay active and get your daily steps in. You can do Parkrun for free if you fancy getting a little competitive. Otherwise, just head outside and enjoy a run in the fresh air. 

  1. Body weight workouts

You can do bodyweight workouts anywhere. From squats and press-ups to sit-ups and lunges, there are tons of exercises you can do outdoors. 

  1. Cycling

OK, it's not completely free as you do need a bike and all the right kit, but once you have that, you can head out cycling anywhere. Plus, you can travel long distances and try all sorts of scenic rides around the UK. 

  1. Wild swimming

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise. It’s great because it’s low impact, so there’s less pressure on all your joints. And wild swimming? It’s completely free. Head down to the sea (make sure you swim somewhere safe with a lifeguard) or an open water swimming lake. 

  1. Stair climbs

We mentioned hill climbs earlier, but stair climbs can be another good outdoor challenge. Find a set of steps and head up and down them as many times as you can manage! This works particularly well if you’re in a city and don’t have access to the countryside. 

  1. Yoga

Find a good Yoga channel on Youtube and a pretty spot to set up your yoga mat and you’re good to go. Yoga outdoors in nature can be very relaxing and therapeutic. 

  1. Skipping

You’ll need to buy a skipping rope but you can get one for under £20. Did you know rope jumping is a competitive sport? Now’s the perfect time to polish up your skipping and learn some new skills. 

  1. Basketball courts/football 

If you don’t fancy a workout in the woods or a run, then perhaps you’ll enjoy kicking a ball around in the park. Find a local outdoor basketball court if you enjoy throwing some hoops. You can burn a decent amount of calories running around a sports pitch. 

When you’re out and about exercising (especially in the heat), don’t forget to stay hydrated. Take a reusable bottle or protein shaker with you.
