Here's How To Enjoy A Flipping Fantastic Low Sugar Pancake Day

Pancake Day (or Shrove Tuesday as it’s traditionally known) is a glorious annual excuse to transform your kitchen into a pancake-flipping arena.

It’s a day when even those who aren’t confident chefs in the kitchen dust off the frying pan and embrace our inner chef!

But what if you’re watching your waistline, managing diabetes, or focused on increasing your muscle mass?

Well, the good news is, there’s no need for you to miss out. With The Skinny Food Co., Shrove Day can still be deliciously satisfying - without excess calories, sugar, and fat.

From fat-free, sugar-free Sticky Toffee Pudding Sauce to traditional Golden Syrup, you’ll find everything you need for Pancake Day in our Pancake Day Collection

Are healthy pancakes a myth?

Definitely not.

Traditional British pancakes are thin, crepe-like, and perfect for flipping - a far cry from American fluffy pancakes (but still equally tasty).

While traditional recipes call for white flour, milk, eggs, and plenty of lemon juice and sugar, there are many ways to make the recipe more diet-friendly.

You could try swapping white flour for wholemeal, spelt or oat flour for extra fibre and slower-releasing energy.

If you’re managing your blood sugar levels, almond or coconut flour can be used to create yummy low-carb pancakes.

And if your aim is to up your protein intake with some protein pancakes, you can add a scoop of your favourite flavoured protein powder to the mix.

Don’t have time to make your own? Our low-sugar pancake mix contains ingredients to make 10 pancakes. And with just 27 calories per pancake, our mix puts this tasty treat back on the dessert menu.

All you need to do is add 40 ml of milk or water to a cup or bowl, stir in 15g of pancake mix and give it a good whisk until it’s smooth.

Once the batter is ready, add it to a boiling hot frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and cook it gently for 90 seconds on each side.

Can I make dairy-free and egg-free pancakes?

Absolutely. Just swap cow’s milk for almond, oat, or soya alternatives, and replace the eggs with mashed banana or chia seeds soaked in water.

These substitutions make pancakes that taste incredible but are gentler on your digestive system and the planet.

What pancake toppings are best if I’m trying to lose weight?

Fresh berries will add natural sweetness (and an antioxidant boost), while Greek yoghurt brings protein and creaminess without the fat content of cream.

You could try serving your pancakes with sliced bananas for potassium and a drizzle of our low-sugar, low-calorie Maple Syrup for a sweet (fat-free!) finish.

If you have a sweet tooth, make your own fruit compote by gently simmering frozen berries with a splash of water and vanilla extract.

Still can’t decide? Check out our Pancake Day Bundles. Our Best Selling Pancake Day Bundle contains Maple Syrup, Golden Syrup, Chocaholic Spread, Strawberry Jam, and Pancake Mix - all for just £14.99.

What about savoury pancakes?

Let’s not forget that pancakes are an excellent savoury dish, too.

If you prefer your pancakes with savoury toppings, smashed avocado and poached eggs are a protein-packed option.

For a calcium and iron boost, fill your pancakes with spinach and low-fat cottage cheese.

How to have a happy Pancake Day 2025

Enjoying a treat now and then doesn’t have to spoil your diet plan.

In fact, eating a little bit of what you fancy this Pancake Day might make your diet more sustainable in the long run.
