The Juice Diet Explained

The Juice Diet is emerging as a new trending diet and has become pretty prevalent in the dieting world. But what actually is the Juice Diet?

Juice diets have become increasingly popular and are known as a 'quick fix' regime, promising dramatic weight loss in a short period of time. The diet also claims other health benefits such as 'detoxing' the body and its vital organs, as well as improving your mood and clearing your skin.

However, we must question whether this diet actually works, is the weight loss sustainable and is it just another dangerous fad diet?

What does the Juice Diet consist of?

Well … juice, to put it simply.

Many juice diets involve abstaining from eating other foods and only drinking juice. Some extreme juice diets are limited to a short period of time, between 3 days to one week.

To attempt a juice cleanse, you'll need to invest in a juicer. The juicer will squeeze all the juice out of fruits and vegetables leaving the pulp behind. Some recipes incorporate superfood powders and supplements to boost mineral intake.

Alternatively, there's businesses who specialise in supplying Juice Detox Diet juices which you can purchase online.

Fruit and Vegetables you can use in a Juice Diet include:

  • Carrots
  • Cucumber
  • Apples
  • Spinach
  • Avocado
  • Fennel
  • Blueberry
  • Pineapple
  • Oranges
  • Celery
  • Ginger

Basically, any fruit or vegetable can be used during a juice diet, and you can come up with some pretty interesting and fun flavours by experimenting with different foods!

What are the benefits of a Juice Diet?

There are some known health benefits with the juice diet, although there is little scientific evidence to support this.

Vegetables and fruits are full of nutrients, minerals and vitamins, so by consuming these juices you're basically guaranteed to get a variety of nutrients.

Some advocates claim that the juice diet offers a form if detox - however our bodies have a in-built detox system which includes the liver, kidneys, lungs, guts and skin. So realistically, you don't need to follow of juice diet to 'detox' the body.

Can you lose weight from a Juice Diet?

Most individuals who follow a juice diet have claimed to lose weight, which is to be expected as they are cutting of sources of fat and protein as well as significantly cutting their calorie intake. However, the weight loss has been known to be less sustainable in the longer term once you return to your usual eating habits.

What are the risks of a Juice Diet?

Juice cleanses are a type of 'fad' and 'crash' diet, so it is very important to approach this diet with caution.

The juice diet essentially deprives your body of important nutrients, so you should research the possible side effects before you invest.

Some symptoms of these low calorie diets include:

  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea

It's always best to follow a balanced diet, and is definitely the safest option if you're wanting to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Tips for Juicing

  • Prepare in advance, do your research on side effects and ask yourself if this is the diet for you. Seek out medical advice from a professional if you are unsure
  • Pick your foods wisely, ensure you have a good mix in there to get the most nutrients out of your juice
  • Pick the right juicer for the job, you can purchase juicers from known retailers in store or online
  • Search for some delicious juice recipes to get started!
  • If you're buying ready-made juices from an external business, ensure you're reading the reviews and customer testimonials prior to purchase
