The Effects Of Eating Too Much Sugar - What Does It Do To Your Body?

Sugar. It’s fair to say it’s got a bad reputation, and for good reason. A small amount of sugar per day isn’t harmful. But the same rule applies for most things - everything in moderation.

The things we love the most often contain LOTS of sugar!

So if you’re having three sugars in your tea, eating a bag of doughnuts every day and consuming lots of sugar drinks, well, you’re body is not going to be happy.

Though it’s not just the obvious sweet treats that contain sugar, you’d be surprised just how many foods have a high sugar content. For example, foods such as bread, tomato sauce, baked beans, granola and even low fat yoghurt have a fair amount of sugar. It’s easy for your daily sugar intake to creep up to a dangerous level.

You’re probably aware that eating too much sugar is bad for you, but do you know what it does to your body? Here are some of things you might experience if you overindulge your sweet tooth.

1. It can cause weight gain.

With rates of obesity across the globe on the rise, it is thought that added sugar, especially from high sugar beverages such as fizzy drinks and juices are one of the main culprits when it comes to weight gain. Some totally cut out these types of drinks to avoid ‘drinking their calories’.

2. It has been linked to causing acne or poor skin.

Some research suggests that those who consume high refined carb diets including sugary foods and drinks are more susceptible to developing acne. Sugary foods quickly spike your blood sugar and insulin levels, this can cause increased androgen secretion, inflammation and oil production which can contribute to the development of acne.

3. May put you at higher risk of heart disease.

Over the years, research has found that high-sugar diets have been linked with an increase in a number of different diseases, including heart disease which is the number one cause of death, worldwide. Evidence indicates that diets that are high in sugar can lead to inflammation, obesity, high blood pressure levels, all of which are factors for heart disease.

4. Increases your risk of diabetes.

Diabetes across the globe has more than doubled in the past thirty years. Although there are a number of contributing factors to this, research has found a clear link between the consumption of excessive sugar and the risk of diabetes. Obesity is considered to be the strongest risk factor for diabetes, which can often be a domino effect of high sugar consumption.

5. Drains your energy.

Foods that contain high amounts of sugar can quickly spike your blood sugar and insulin levels, leading to feels of increased energy. Although, this feeling is a short-lived one. Food and drinks that are high in added sugar can lead to an energy boost that is shortly followed by a sharp drop in blood sugar, which is commonly referred to as a crash, leading to that drained feeling.

6. May significantly affect your mood.

Whilst research suggests that a healthy diet can be linked to helping to improve your mood, a diet that is high in added sugar may have the opposite effect. Studies have actually found that consuming high quantities of sugary cakes and drinks, can be associated with a higher risk of depression.

Now, we’re not trying to scare you, if sugar is consumed within recommended guidelines the risks of the above are relatively low as the majority of these are linked to high sugar consumption.
