The sparkliest night of the year is fast approaching. There will be pops in the sky, hot chocolates to hand and the smell of mini bonfires in the background as everyone looks up. Although the usual firework displays won’t be around to celebrate the 5th November, we can still keep the magic alive in 2020.

In today’s article, we’re going to be delivering you with 10 Things That You Need To Know About Bonfire Night. These facts might have your mind-blown, or you may just be in the festive mood even more so. 

Bonfire Night Facts 


  1. Did you know that sparklers burn at 15x the boiling point of water? That’s a whopping 1,500 degrees and equivalent to a blow torch if you put three together. So, ladies and gents, make sure you keep those gloves on!
  2. Ever wondered why you see the glittery colours of a firework before you hear the bang? That’s because sound travels at 761mph, whereas light travels at a staggering 671,000,000mph. Explains it all, right?
  3. It was once illegal if you didn’t celebrate Bonfire Night in Britain. In fact, that was up until 1959… Not long at all.
  4. The Yeoman of the Guard still searches the Houses Of Parliament every 5th November, using lanterns as a tradition!
  5. Somewhere amongst the Galapagos Islands lies Isla Guy Fawkes, an uninhabited island that still remains a mystery to this day. Was this where Guy Fawkes planned to escape to?
  6. The first-ever firework display took place in 1486 at King Henry VII’s wedding.
  7. If Guy Fawkes had lit the 2,500kg of gunpowder, he would have caused damage to a whopping 500 metres of land. 
  8. The largest rocket firework weighed 13kg and was set alight in Portugal in 2010. That’s one big bang.
  9. The word firework originates from the Japanese word ‘Hanabi’ which means ‘fire-flower’.
  10.  During World War I and World War II, no one was allowed to set off fireworks or light bonfires in case enemies saw the light.
