What are Birria Tacos? 

Ok so if you've not heard of these deliciously slow cooker-inspired corn tortilla tacos, then you may not have had TikTok back in 2022. But don't fear, this viral internet food trend can easily be recreated at home with your favourite shredded meat, melty cheese and delicious seasoning.

What is so special about Birria Tacos? 

Birria tacos are a unique dish in that they combine the flavours of Mexican cuisine with slow-cooking techniques. The meat is cooked in a rich sauce made from chile peppers, spices, and garlic - all of which come together to create an incredibly flavourful taco. In addition to being packed with flavour, birria tacos also have a distinct texture thanks to the shredded or chopped tender meat. 


To make the tacos, you will need:

  • 4 cups of shredded beef (or pork, chicken, or turkey)

  • 2 tablespoons of chilli powder

  • 2 teaspoons of cumin

  • 1 teaspoon of oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Skinny Sriracha Sauce

  • Skinny Garlic & Lemon Sauce

  • 25g shredded Mexican cheese


How to make Birria Tacos

Birria Tacos

To begin, heat up a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the shredded beef. Cook the meat until it is evenly browned, stirring occasionally. When the beef is cooked through, add the chilli powder, cumin, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder and salt and pepper to taste. Stir everything together and cook for an additional two minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside.

Next, heat up a flat griddle over medium-high heat and place four small flour tortillas onto the griddle. Cook the tortillas for about one minute on each side, flipping them over with tongs.

Once the tortillas are cooked, spoon some of the beef mixtures onto each of the four tortillas. Carefully fold the tacos in half and cook them on the griddle for an additional two minutes on each side.

Finally, it is time to serve your birria tacos! Serve these delicious tacos with a side of diced onion, cilantro, radishes, salsa, a sprinkling of grated cheese and any of your favourite Skinny Food Co Sauces, whether that's our hot & spicy Sriracha or our cooling garlic mayo or garlic & lemon sauce


What spices to use in Birria Tacos? 

The spices used to make birria tacos will depend on your own personal preference - however, some of the most common spices used in this traditional dish include chilli powder, cumin, oregano, garlic powder and white onion powder. Depending on how spicy you like your tacos, you may also want to add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chipotle chilli flakes, most popular Birria tacos include guajillo chiles or ancho chiles, alongside a generous cracking of black peppercorns.

What toppings to include with Birria Tacos?

Birria tacos are typically served with a variety of toppings, including diced onion, cilantro, radishes, salsa and grated cheese.
