How To Make A Mojito | Skinny Cocktail Guide

How To Make A Mojito | Skinny Cocktail Guide - theskinnyfoodco

This deliciously refreshing Cuban cocktail is a classic favourite amongst us Brits. Traditionally served 'on the rocks or 'over ice' it's an incredibly popular classic cocktail, with countless ways to make it creative. Here's our take on our classic rum cocktail, the refreshing mojito.

For this recipe, you can choose to have it as a blended ice drink, or using a muddler mix together. Depending on the desired textures. If you prefer an iced drink such as a margarita, grab your blender! If you'd rather have a traditional blend of mint with mixed ice cubes, then you'll need to get your hands on a muddler (or the back of a wooden spoon)

What is a Mojito?

Mojitos are made with rum, lime juice, sugar, mint leaves, and ice. They're a refreshing drink that pairs well with just about anything. Here's how to make a perfect mojito every single time.

Traditional Mint Mojito

How to make a Mojito?

1. Choose Rum

When it comes to making the perfect mojito cocktail, there's no right or wrong answer when it comes to what rum should be used.

You can choose from white rum such as:

  • Bacardi Carta Blanca
  • Havana Club Anejo Blanco
  • Bayou White Rum

Or dark rums such as:

  • Captain Morgan Dark Rum
  • Plantation Original Dark Double-Aged Rum
  • Havana Club Anejo

Both rum types work well, whilst white rums tend to be sweeter, dark rums can often be stronger. Both pair incredibly well with the freshness of the fresh mint leaves & lime wedges.

2. Add a Sugar Rim

Sugar brings sweetness to your cocktail, creating a sugar rim as a quick and effective way to take your standard cocktail to next-level mixologist standards.

You'll need a flat plate to place your granulated sugar.

Dip your tall glass in a liquid, we recommend lime or lemon juice this will allow the sugar to stick better, however you can use water.

Gently place the tip of your wet glass into the white sugar and voila! Easy.

3. Add Lime Juice

Lime juice adds flavour and acidity to your drink and is the key component that brings it all together, blending the aroma of mint with the fresh lime juice, making the refreshing cocktail flavour.

For this recipe, we'll use the juice of 1 lime, using the remaining lime slices as a garnish.

4. Soda Water to Taste

Whether you're making a flavoured mojito such as popular strawberry mojitos, raspberry mojitos or a classic mint mojito, you'll need to add soda water to taste, fizzy soda water gives the mojito its refreshing taste.

5. Muddle Mint Leaves

Mint leaves add fragrance and colour to your drink. Muddling involves crushing the leaves into small pieces. To muddle, place the mint leaves in the bottom of a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until the leaves release their oils and aroma.

6. Garnish with Fresh Mint

Fresh mint garnishes add colour and flavour to your drink. Simply tear a leaf off the stem and drop it into the glass, you can also choose to include whole mint sprigs if desired.
