The Skinny Food Co Customer Review: EP 14 Leigh Wood

The Skinny Food Co sat down with Leigh Wood, WBA World Champion, to talk about his journey to success in the boxing arena.

How did you get into boxing?

I really wasn't good at football, at the time I didn't realise why. All the kids my age at school, their dads used to take them football training in the week and at weekends and I always thought they were better than me. So I hoped I would find what I was good at eventually. I then started to go boxing with my brother and his friends and I quickly picked it up, enjoyed it and got hooked from there.

Do you need to make sacrifices in your life to ensure boxing is your main focus?

Yes I need to make a lot of sacrifices when it comes to boxing. I've missed out on holidays, on Christmases with my family, birthdays, weekends socialising with my friends - but it’s all worth it.

Did you ever think you would be where you are today in boxing?

I believed I was good enough, however there was a time in my career when I wasn't getting any opportunities and I was doubting whether they would ever come. I remained focussed and dedicated to my craft and eventually it all paid off.

What is your biggest achievement?

Winning the WBA World Title is 100% my biggest win. I was a massive under dog with the bookies and fans as well.

What would you say to aspiring boxers?

Stick at it. You'll have good and bad days, you might lose a few fights but always stay dedicated and stick at it. Keep the willingness to learn and you’ll get there in the end.

What are you typically eating in a normal routine?

A few meals a day and a balanced diet - a balanced diet is best thing to do to make weight.

I use a lot of The Skinny Food Co products everyday, especially when I'm getting closer to the weight and I'm unable to have as many treats. I use the Skinny Food Co products to replace things that I'm not allowed, which also helps with adding extra flavours to my oats with my banoffee syrup. The coffee syrups are part of my everyday routine, they really help as they are low calorie but I can still have something tasty.

Do you have to be strict with your diet?

Yes. The closer it gets to a fight the more strict I have to be, that's just a part of boxing and it's part of the discipline.

What Skinny Food Co products do you enjoy the most?

My favourite product is the White Chocolate Spread. Other products I use the most are the syrups which I have on my oats and I'm also a massive fan of the coffee syrups.

Do you usually speak to your competitors after a fight?

Sometimes it depends on the individual. I have spoken to a few of people, Ryan Doyle I still speak to quite regularly.

Your recent fight with Can Xu, did you speak after?

We spoke briefly backstage after the fight, just a casual "thanks for opportunity" chat.

What is it like behind the scenes leading up to a fight and after?

Before the fight it's very chilled normally, I'm in a good frame of mind and having something to eat to refuel and rehydrate.

After the fight it's also quite chilled - we have a laugh. My two close friends are there, I have a laugh with Ben my coach and the rest of my team. We laugh and enjoy, its part of the experience.

After the fight normally I'll also catch up on junk food like pizza, things I'm not normally allowed to eat. I'll also spend more time in Nottingham seeing friends and family I don't see as much.

How are you feeling about your upcoming fight with Mick Conlan?

Not sure where it's going to be held yet, hopefully in Nottingham, but we should find out soon. I'm feeling confident, I've been down here with Ben since last November, 6 months I've won a British Title by a knockout, then the World Title banner.

I'm going from strength to strength and everything is coming together. I've got a proper team around me and I'm confident I'll get the job done in great fashion.
